Car Charger Control with the SG-Hub

Car charger control is one of the feature of the SG-Hub, a HEMS (Home Energy Management System) which is also suitable for controlling heat pumps and PV-Systems.

Smart charging involves taking energy prices into account. The car battery is charged when electricity is cheapest. To prevent feeding back electricity to the grid, energy consumption data from a P1-meter or Shelly EM is read out. This way, electricity generated by solar panels is used to charge the car battery, instead of feeding it back to the grid.

When a P1-meter is read, the SG-Hub can also apply a power production limit to the PV-system. If household electrical appliances cause high power consumption, the car charger waits to charge so as not to overload the electrical installation.

A bidirectional car charger (BiDi) is able to charge and discharge a car battery. This car charger is more expensive, but offers the advantage that energy from the car battery is used when mains power is expensive.
